Getting Foolish for the Father

You never really know what you're going to hear in church on Sunday, but this Sunday, I heard a gem. The Pastor at my church spoke on the topic of looking foolish, but in a way I have never heard before.

When I say "foolish", what do you think?

At first, I immediately thought, "embarrassment, judgment, rejection from my peers". It's hard to act foolish, or look different, in today's society because we all judge so harshly of each other. It's in our nature to reject things are different from us, but why?

God calls us to be different, to walk down a path that the rest of the world doesn't understand. And if we are being honest, that's really scary. Most of what God calls us to do makes us look really strange to others. Think about it. We as Christians go to church and sing love songs to an invisible God. Doesn't that sound a little odd? I think the reason why we look strange following God's call is because God has set us apart. If we looked and acted like everyone else in the world, how could the people we are reaching out to tell who our God is? Looking like everyone else would just make Christians blend in.

If you ask me, Christians should be anything but mainstream.

Sometimes we need to be willing to look undignified and silly in order to follow God's commands, but to me that seems like the least I could do considering that God sacrificed His one and only Son to cleanse me of my sins. Don't be afraid to get a little foolish for the Father, after all, He does know best.
